Pakistan’s humiliation at the hands of a resurgent Australian team was complete on Monday when the visitors succumbed to their 2nd successive innings defeat resulting in a 0-2 series whitewash by Tim Paine’s team in Adelaide. Azhar Ali-led Pakistan had lost the 1st Test in Brisbane by an innings and 5 runs and went on to lose the Day-night Test in Adelaide by another innings margin.

The series will be counted as an utter disappointment for the tourists except for a few bright sparks, with the major ones being centuries from Babar Azam and Yasir Shah in Brisbane and Adelaide respectively. Keep these 2 aside, and you’re left with multiple batting failures, one of the weakest bowling performances going around and a number of viral clips on social media.

To top it all, this short 2-match series proved to be the worst for any Pakistan bowling attack, particularly the pacemen. Overall, Pakistan bowlers averaged 89.92 in the 4 innings, making it the worst ever bowling attack from the country to tour Down Under. They also conceded runs at over 4 runs an over, owing to their tactics of often bowling short and the relative inexperience of the pace attack.

The pacers on their part could only muster 7 wickets out of the 13 which fell across the 2 Australian innings and betrayed the long-held tradition of Pakistan producing an assembly line of great fast bowlers. However, to be fair to the youngsters Muhammad Musa and Naseem Shah, it could yet prove to be a great learning curve as their careers progress forward.

But perhaps the most telling stat which would hurt Pakistan the most is that they have now lost 14 Tests in a row on Australian soil – a streak that started in 1999. This is now the longest consecutive losing streak for any team in a particular country as the hosts capped their 5th consecutive Test series whitewash of the tourists. Pakistan last won a Test in Australia in 1995 when they lost the 3-Test series 2-1.

However, Pakistan being Pakistan, the 2-Test series provided copious amounts of viral social media moments including the highs of Babar Azam timing the ball sweetly or Yasir Shah’s animated maiden century celebration and the low of Shaheen Afridi’s ‘ball-goal’ in Adelaide or Mohammad Abbas’ suicidal run-out which ended the series.

In essence, Pakistan have been handed a grand hiding in Australia as a result of which they are yet to win a Test in 2019. But what would comfort them more is that they are now going back to their real home to play a 2-Test series against Sri Lanka. Azhar Ali will hope that more substance comes out of the upcoming series than viral Twitter videos.
